People Congratulate Prince William Since King Charles Isn’t Allowed To Attend Pope’s Funeral
As the world prepares to say farewell to Pope Francis, Kensington Palace has confirmed that Prince William will attend the funeral on behalf of King Charles III. The funeral, set for Saturday, April 26 at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, will draw numerous global leaders including US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Due to long-standing royal protocol, King Charles is not permitted to attend the ceremony himself. Royal expert Katie Nicholl noted that, historically, the British monarch does not attend funerals—papal or otherwise—out of custom and precedence.
This isn’t without precedent. In 2005, then-Prince Charles delayed his wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles to represent Queen Elizabeth II at Pope John Paul II’s funeral.
Though some view William’s attendance as symbolic, experts say it strictly reflects his role as heir to the throne. Reactions online were mixed, with many praising William for stepping up, calling the moment “significant” and “worthy of his mother’s pride.”
King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Pope Francis privately on April 9, shortly before his passing. In a heartfelt message after the Pope’s death, Charles recalled the meeting with “particular affection.”
While William will one day lead the Church of England, insiders say his personal faith is more reserved than his father’s.
